Vintage ConditionsThe lead up to the 2009 harvest was one of the best on record, with refreshing rains during Spring and Mild December Temperatures. This led to fruit with flavour, intensity and acid structure not seen for a few years. This all changed at the end of January with an unprecedented heat wave of plus 40 degrees for 14 days which saw ripening stall for 3 weeks. Overall the vintage was good to excellent.
Vinification and MaturationThis wine is a blend of many different parcels of Chardonnay fruit, each parcel being kept as an individual until blending prior to stabilization and bottling. The fruit was harvested in the cool of the night to minimize oxidation and retain true varietal characters, then promptly delivered to the winery for processing. The fruit was crushed into McWilliams drainers where the premium free-run juice was extracted, chilled and settled for 36 hrs. After 36 hrs the brilliantly clear juice was racked and warmed to ferment at around 14 degrees. 70 % of the parcels were fermented in stainless steel tanks to result in a wine with abundant fruit character while the remaining parcels were fermented in a combination of French oak barriques and hogs heads oak barrels. A portion of this oak component was then put through Malo-Lactic fermentation to provide a blending component which ensures a final wine rich in complexity and character. Each parcel was fermented using carefully selected yeast strains to enhance the obvious positive attributes of each juice. All parcels were left on yeast lees for up to 10 months to contribute richness to the wine.

AromaThis highly varietal nose contains intense white peach, nectarine and rockmelon. These characters are complemented with tropical fruits and exotic notes of guava and paw paw. Combined with these notes and subtle nutty aromas coming through from the fine French oak, with small amounts of Malo-Lactic fermentation providing some complex butterscotch.
PalateSweet intense rockmelon, peach and citrus flavours are prevalent on this rich palate. Showing lovely texture, the palate is balanced out with some clean acidity, providing length and structure. French oak provides tightness and length, with some creamy notes also coming through. The finish is long and fresh, with a balanced, clean end.
