Vintage ConditionsIn the Hunter, a very good growing period with above average Winter and Spring rainfall resulted in an excellent crop. Late December 2008 was very dry and early January 2009 was both dry and hot. This provided power and concentration of flavours and colour to the resultant wine . The fruit was carefully handpicked in the cool morning period to retain freshness and to ensure quality. The 2008/2009 growing season in Heathcote was challenging due to heat and continued drought. The season started with the benefit of average winter rains, but a dry Spring with very little rainfall until November followed. A dry, hot January and February was met with judicious supplementary water to maintain a functioning canopy. The fruit was harvested in the cool of the night at optimum flavours in early March.
Vinification and MaturationVinified in a mixture of static and open top fermenters for up to a period of 10 days on skins. The wine was then pumped over up to eight times daily or headed down and drained and returned twice daily. After pressing the wine was matured, with some components in French oak, for up to 15 months prior to blending.
