There’s a lovely story about this bartender favourite being invented by Winston Churchill’s Mum. It puts the inception at soiree at the Manhattan Club. It might have been true too if she weren’t in France at the time pregnant with Winston.
All we actually know is from an interview with the bartender from the Manhattan club at the time. He tells us it was invented at a New York bar on Broadway near Huston Street by a man named Black.
The Dry Manhattan become popular much later. The Rat Pack, Humphrey Bogart, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop heroed the drink with dry vermouth. peculiar. For my money, I’ll drink a sweet Manhattan every time.
Drink it Sweet (recipe featured here), Perfect (Rosso & dry vermouth) or Dry (dry vermouth only)
